McCormick Property Development is currently building a mall in Mabopane Block X Extension which will be named “Mabopane Square” and is set to cost approximately R127 million. Approximately 220 locals have contributed to the construction of the mall.
McCormick Property Development is a company that has been in existence for 36 years and develops retail centres in under-serviced areas. According to Ruan van Rensburg who is the project manager on site, the company has worked on a number of iconic projects including Alex Mall, Chris Hani Crossing and currently, Mall of Tembisa. The Architect company that designed Mabopane Square is the same company that designed Mall of Africa.
He further stated that the mall will create close to 550 jobs. There will be 33 shops including Rage, Clicks and Sleep Masters to name a few. They will be extending the number of shops should the need arise.
In terms of security, the company and the center management will have a centralized security system to deal with criminal activities and they will also work closely with local authorities.
The mall boasts unique features such as a water-park (using recycled water) where children will be entertained.
The waste generated by the centre will be sorted and recycled, while the carbon footprint will be reduced through energy efficient appliances and components.
A local resident Phillemon Maleka said he cannot wait for the mall to open because his shopping will be made easier. “The new mall is just around the corner from my house, I thank them for building the mall in my area,” he said.
The mall will open on the 31st of October 2019 at 7:00 am. There will be live entertainment and prize giveaways throughout the day.
