Cable theft leaves residents in the dark

Story By : Patricia Modiga

Cable theft in large parts of Madidi village is becoming a habit to thugs. This has left many community members in the dark and they are demanding answers from the municipality on the situation and seeking help from Eskom.

Richard Matjeke a resident of Madidi explained that this is not a one-time thing but it is now becoming a habit of thugs in this area.

“This is not the first time we are facing this crisis in our community and its now getting out of hand, we do not know what to do because we know Eskom will come after months to help us.”

What are we supposed to do meanwhile living without electricity ;we find it hard to cope,” Macheke said.

Frans Maifadi a community member on Block C told Speak Madidi that, “it was around midday when dogs were barking and I went outside to check only to find guys wearing black clothes, one was in my yard trying to cut off the cable and I called for help that scared him off, he then left the cable and ran away.

Maifadi said one of the neighbours Rebecca Monang found that there was not any cable anymore in the morning.

Monang said that “This is affecting us, it is month end we already bought groceries and our food will get spoiled”.

BigBoy Sefiri a resident in Block D told the Speak Madidi of his frustration over cable theft.

“We cannot charge our phones and I run a barbershop; my business is suffering due to this cable theft that is clearly affecting the whole community of Madidi,” Said Sefiri.

Dineo Maluleka a resident in Block E was found traumatised on what she witnessed

“I was on a phone call around 00h46 by that time they were cutting the cable off and I saw some blue spark outside my bedroom window and saw two giant guys wearing black clothes, the other one was holding a gun and the other had a big knife while cutting the cable,” She said.

Onicca Mekwa a resident has explained how devastated she is.

Mekwa said cable thugs came around 00h00 and she heard a strange noise ,she decided to open the door and saw two men outside her yard .By the time she opened the door to check, they were already done and they fired three bullets to scare her off

  1. In much of Iran, alcohol is available with relative ease on the black market, either produced at home such as Aragh Sagi, usually brewed from raisins or smuggled in from
Turkey or Iraqi Kurdistan in what is believed to be a multimillion-dollar business.

  15. The road seemed to stretch on endlessly before us, but Alexis assured me that our journey was near an end. We’d turn before long into thick woods and travel through narrow, winding roads until we reached her family’s cabin. I had no choice but to trust her as GPS had given out nearly 20 minutes ago.

“There’s good wifi and okay reception at the cabin,” she’d told me, “but you can’t get there unless you know the way.”

So here I was, driving alone in the middle of god knows where with a girl who was my student just a couple of weeks ago. Her and her four best friends had been together from first grade all the way through high school and now they had graduated with very different futures ahead of them. They had decided to kick off “the best summer ever” with a week long stay at Alexis’s family cabin. Alexis and I were heading up before everyone else, the four other girls and four guys.
