Akasia football association, Cream Sports Management, Bubbles Media and City of Tshwane hosted the 1st annual katlego Mphela community soccer tournament on Friday at the Derting Sports Ground in Pretoria.
The tournament was mainly arranged as Mphela’s way of giving backing to the community , to remove young people from the streets and also to scout young football players who will be placed in the National First Division (NFD) and ABC Motsepe league; which are the 2nd and 3rd tier leagues in the country respectively .
The scouted players will be taken to those leagues as early as January next year and they will be under Mphela’s player management company called Cream Sports Management .
The event organizers wish to improve by increasing the length of the tournament from one to two or more days , and also increase the number of teams.
“Next time we want to market the event even more and find more sponsorships,” said Mphela.
The tournament had numerous teams taking part in the activities that were offered on the day including netball and soccer. There were two netball teams and 18 soccer teams that were grouped according to various age groups.
Teams that won the tournament include Dynamite netball team, Gezina senior football team and Etwatwa ladies; the winning teams will receive their full prices in due course including new team jerseys and prize money. Mphela advised all the parents to bring their children to his tournament next year.
