The continuous occurrence of bullying at a local school called Modiri Secondary school in Ga-Rankuwa has led to a huge uproar from pupils, parents and local Non-profitable organization Not in my name.
A grade 12 pupil from Modiri Secondary school has become another victim of bullying and violence at the school. In a video circulating on social media the pupil is being poured over her head with white liquid then hit with the container. In another video, the pupil is being slapped several times by her fellow female school mate.
The incident occurred on Wednesday and it went viral on social media that it reached the attention of Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi . Who went to the school on Thursday afternoon; during his visit after talking to the victim and her parents he advised the pupil to open a case against the bully and the case will be handled by Special investigating unit at provincial level.
“The accused will be suspended and the victim will receive counselling,” said Lesufi.
Pupils from the school welcomed the recommendations that were made by the MEC. They said they have been having an issue of bullying for quite some time at the school and have been bullied by the same pupil in the video.
They also added that the ongoing bullying has affected their school work.
Kabelo Theoga from Not In My Name questioned the reply of the school principal that the incident happened outside of the school; so he was unable to protect the learners.
Theoga assured the family of the victim that her organization will be supporting the family until justice is served.
Lesufi’s visit also resulted in the School Governing Body (SGB) being dissolved after it was found that they were interfering in running of the school which led to fights among themselves.
