The elderly are often put in old age homes and forgotten by their family, many old age homes are nongovernmental organisations that takes care of the old and frail. Tshepang old age home in Madidi just putside Pretoria received food parcels, clothes and other necessities from youth in the area.
Mamello Maree sought help in Facebook group Madidi Speak and Listen asking residents for contributions to help old age homes around madidi.
“The idea of lending a helping hand to old age homes was Katlego Makobe’s idea, it ran but had stopped because of various reasons,” said Maree.
“I saw the opportunity to bring back idea to help out where I can and our help does not stop at this old age home, we will be visiting other old age homes around,” she added.
The youth of Madidi spent their 67 minutes on Mandela day at Tshepang Old Age Home, where they noticed that the home does not have enough food and other necessities.
That’s when they regrouped and decided to accept donations from community members to help the elderly, and handed over those donations in the first week of August.
The old age home has a total of 16 elderly people and it’s workers are all based in Madidi.
The owner of the old home wrote a letter to all those who made contributions to thank them for their kindness and humanity.
